Our Vision

Making our mark on the improv stage

Founded in 2008 by Merrilee McCoy and Derek Flores under Wellington Improv Troupe, New Zealand Improv Festival is now in its 11th year and operates under the New Zealand Improv Trust.

We are dedicated to presenting high quality improvised theatre to audiences in New Zealand’s cultural capital, Wellington. We aim to highlight the varying forms of improvised theatre to the public in a festival setting to celebrate the great work going on around New Zealand (and the world).

In addition, we bring together improvisors from around NZ and the world for a professional and productive week of development, connection, learning and laughter.

2019 Goals:

  • Deliver a festival for the NZ improvisation community and the Wellington theatre audience that celebrates and showcases improvisational theatre from around the country, with select work from overseas

  • Deliver a high quality, varied workshop programme, supporting experienced and newer teachers alike

  • Maintain/increase funding levels to support personnel, marketing, and to maintain affordable costs for participants and audience

  • Develop our scholarship/inclusion policy to better support marginalised community members

  • Add a youth performance and workshop season to the line up, creating opportunities for 13-18 year olds to work with visiting teachers and to perform alongside them at a professional venue
