Media Policy 2024

People who attend the 2024 New Zealand Improv Festival are asked to sign a release form that grants the Festival non-exclusive permission to use audio, video and images of their likeness in promoting the Festival. You can find details of this release here. Participants have the right to refuse to sign the form.

Similarly, we ask photographers who take photos of Festival shows that we can use their photos to promote the festival, and that directors and performers can use those photos to promote their shows, all on the condition that a credit to the photographer is provided wherever possible.

By default, photos or videos taken at Festival events from the 2024 Festival onwards can be used to promote the Festival, especially places like social media, event listings, the NZIF website and BATS website, and will be made available to show directors and performers for promotional use (above). If participants decline to sign the release form, NZIF will not use photos/videos featuring them to promote the Festival or its events without explicit permission.

Photos or videos taken at NZIF events prior to the 2024 Festival may not have associated release forms from the people featured in them. For these media:

  • Using these photos/videos will be avoided in favour of photos/videos where participants have signed a release form.

  • If an alternative image/video cannot be found, we’ll seek permission from anyone featured in the photo or video to use their likeness.

  • If an alternative image/video cannot be found and we cannot identify or contact the people in the images/video to get their permission, we’ll post the image/video on a takedown basis — individuals featured will need to contact us to request specific items be removed.

  • We will also operate on a takedown basis for any photos/videos that have previously already been posted on NZIF social media accounts or on the NZIF website.

It is against in-house policies at BATS for audience members to take photos or videos of shows unless that has been specifically allowed by the cast/crew.
