Spotlight On: Matt Powell

Matt Powell is a small man with a big heart for improvisation and over 15 years’ performing and teaching experience with The Court Jesters (Christchurch), PlayShop (Wellington), and internationally. His butt looks good in skinny jeans.

Why are you excited about coming back to NZIF?
Meeting (and re-meeting) amazing improvisors from New Zealand and all over the world.

What will people taking your workshop get out of it?
I want people to come away with the idea that they ARE good enough to direct, even if they've only been improvising for a little while. Sometimes we start to second-guess our instincts, instincts that suited us perfectly well when we were "just" audience members watching improv for the very first time. If we can tap into what that was like I think our scenes will have a better connection with our audiences.

Best thing about improv is:
It's the most constantly surprising artform there is. I learn the most about it when I'm teaching things I thought I knew about, and I have the best time improvising when I have no idea what I'm doing.

Catch Matt across NZIF 2016: 4-8 October at BATS Theatre.
